Part 1B - The Beatitudes

Jesus begins his teaching in Matthew 5 with a list of eight character or spiritual states that are approved by God and which he blesses. We call these "The Beatitudes" because each sentence begins with the word "Blessed" (meaning: "How fortunate is the man..."). With each beatitude Jesus defines the developing character of the members of the kingdom of God. Each beatitude includes a reward that this approved person can expect.
